About Fonias Pools
The Fonias pools are a chain of natural rock basins (vathres) carved by the Fonias river as it drops from Mount Saos to the north coast of Samothraki, a few kilometres east of the spa village of Therma. They are one of the island's best-known natural sights and feature in the Greek national tourism board's material on Samothraki's vathres. A path climbs through a shaded gorge of plane trees to the first large pool, a deep green basin under a waterfall of about 12 m; further pools and higher falls lie upstream but involve scrambling and are best left to experienced hikers or guided groups. The water is clear and cold even in summer, especially after a wet spring. Samothraki has long attracted campers and an alternative, back-to-nature crowd, and travel sites note that the island's pools are popular with nudists; a waterfall guide reports that swimming nude is very common at Fonias. There is no defined nude area: people bathe in and around the pools, and in July and August the first pool can be busy with day-trippers, so nudity is most comfortable early or late in the day or at the less visited upper pools. The name means 'murderer' in Greek; the site is about 19 km (under half an hour's drive) from the port.
Getting there
Drive or take the island bus along the north coast road from Kamariotissa past Therma to the Fonias bridge, where there is a car park by the road. From there a marked path follows the gorge for about 5 km to the first pool and waterfall, roughly 40-45 minutes on foot with gentle climbing over rocks and roots; good shoes are needed. The upper pools require scrambling and are not recommended without experience or a guide. Not accessible for wheelchairs.
What visitors say
Visitors describe the hike as easy to moderate and the first pool and waterfall as spectacular, with very cold water. Many say the first pool gets crowded in high season, and that the upper pools are quieter but need care on slippery rock. Guides and traveller sites note a relaxed, alternative atmosphere on Samothraki, with nude bathing common at the pools.

Legal context
Greece has no general legal framework for naturism and nudity is officially not permitted outside the few designated places; in practice nude bathing is widely tolerated on quiet, unorganised beaches as long as nobody objects. The gorge is a natural area with no naturist designation.
Naturism at Fonias Pools sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
