About Diskos beach - Παραλία Δυσκός
Dyskos (also Diskos or Dytikos) is a long beach on the south coast of Crete, about 75 km south-west of Heraklion, just west of the village of Lentas and separated from it by the headland known as Cape Lion. It runs from the small settlement of Dyskos westwards towards Tsigounas, under the bare slopes of the Asterousia mountains. The shore is fine pebble with tamarisk trees spaced along it for shade, the water is clear and usually calm, and it is good for snorkelling and spearfishing. The eastern end, in front of the settlement, has a few tavernas and rooms and gets the families; the beach becomes emptier as you walk west, and the western part, towards Gerokambos, is particularly popular with nude bathers. Lentas and Dyskos were a hippie hangout in the 1970s and still draw independent travellers, long-stay campers and naturists. The beach is a sea-turtle nesting site, and sunsets over the mountains are a highlight.
Getting there
From Heraklion drive south via Mires and the Asterousia mountains to Lentas (about 1.5-2 hours; the last section is winding). From Lentas take the paved road west towards Gerokambos; the beach is on the left about 1 km after the village. Without a car, a short path leads around Cape Lion from Lentas. Park near the settlement and walk west along the pebbles for the nude section. There is no regular bus to Lentas outside limited summer services. Not wheelchair accessible beyond the east end.
What visitors say
Visitors describe Dyskos as quiet and laid-back, with clear water, tamarisk shade and a mix of families near the tavernas and nude bathers further west. Many love the remoteness and the Lentas atmosphere; others find the pebbles uncomfortable and the long winding drive tiring. Ratings on the regional guide are middling, suggesting it divides opinion. Bring water shoes and supplies if heading to the far west end.
