About Aiyos Vasilios

Agios Vasilios, also called Lapathos, is a remote pebble beach on the west coast of Symi, a small, mountainous island in the Dodecanese north of Rhodes. It sits at the head of a long, deep inlet ringed by high, bare rocky slopes dotted with wild cypress, and is described as one of the island's most beautiful beaches. The water is very clear and blue. A few trees above the pebbles give some natural shade. Because it can only be reached by a long hike or by sea taxi, it is quiet even in summer, and the beach guide allovergreece lists it among Greece's nudist beaches, noting that its isolation makes it well suited to nude bathing. There is no formal nude zone; the whole cove is used, and on most days there are few people present. There are no sunbeds, umbrellas or taverna on the beach, so bring water and supplies for the day.

Getting there

On foot, the route from Symi town is about 4.3 km each way and takes around two hours, with roughly 270 m of climb and descent. The last section is a steep descent on loose scree that walking guides warn needs real care; wear proper shoes rather than sandals, carry plenty of water and avoid the midday heat. Alternatively, the beach is served by sea taxi in season. There is no road or parking at the beach, and it is not accessible for people with limited mobility.

What visitors say

Hikers describe the walk as rewarding but tougher than the distance suggests, with the final scree slope the part people remember; some say they would take the boat next time. Those who make it praise the dramatic setting, clear water and near-empty beach. Visitors stress that there is nothing to buy, so water and food must be carried in.

Legal context

Greece has no national register of designated nude beaches; nude bathing is tolerated by custom at remote or long-established spots rather than authorised by law. No local ordinance or signage specific to this beach was found (2026), so keep to the customary area and cover up near families or where others object.

Naturism at Aiyos Vasilios sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

There is no official designation, but beach guides list it as a nudist-friendly beach because of its isolation.
