About Ag. Nikolaos Beach

Agios Nikolaos is a sandy bay on the Anavyssos coast of south-east Attica, about 50 minutes by car from central Athens. It takes its name from the small white chapel of St Nicholas on the rocky knoll above the shore, a popular spot for weddings and christenings. The main beach is a wide strip of sand with an organised section run by a beach bar with sunbeds, snacks, beach volleyball and canoes, while the left side of the bay is a sheltered anchorage full of moored private boats. Nude bathing does not happen on the main beach. Instead, naturists climb over the knoll to a small secluded cove beyond it, and Greek forum posts point to the far left end of the bay as the place to go. Guides note that the cove is small and fills quickly, so it suits a handful of people rather than a crowd. The beach was once a locals' secret but now gets busy on July and August weekends, which makes the quiet cove more valuable and also means clothed bathers pass nearby. Reports from Greek forums suggest the spot attracts mainly men, and some posters describe it as less comfortable for women or couples.

Getting there

Drive the coastal road to Anavyssos and look for a sign on the right leading down a dirt road below the Tourism Professions School; the beach is not visible from the main road. There is a large free parking area, but on July and August weekends it fills, so arrive early. Without a car, take bus 122 from Glyfada and change to the 123. From the beach, the nude cove is reached by climbing the stony path over the knoll by the chapel; wear proper shoes. Not suitable for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

Greek forum users have recommended the far left end of Agios Nikolaos as a nudism spot near Athens, alongside Ramnounta, but the discussion is several years old and thin. Travel writers describe the main beach as beautiful but increasingly crowded and commercial on summer weekends, with the nude cove small and reached by a rough scramble. Some posters say the naturist crowd is mostly male and that cruising occurs, which they feel makes it less welcoming for women and couples; others simply advise seeking more remote beaches for real seclusion.

Legal context

Greek law (Law 1399/1983) only provides for nudism at naturist sites licensed by the National Tourism Organisation; nudity on other beaches is not regulated and is tolerated rather than permitted. A complaint from another bather can bring in the Coast Guard or police under the public-decency provisions of the Penal Code, so stay in the secluded cove and away from the organised section. No signage or recent enforcement reports were found (2026).

Naturism at Ag. Nikolaos Beach sits under Greece's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Frequently asked questions

Is nudity allowed at Agios Nikolaos?

Not officially. Nude bathing is tolerated in the small cove beyond the chapel knoll, but not on the organised main beach, and a complaint can lead to a Coast Guard visit.

Where is the nude section?

Climb the stony path over the knoll by the St Nicholas chapel to the small cove beyond it, at the far left of the bay.

Is there parking?

Yes, a large free parking area at the end of the dirt road, though it fills early on July and August weekends.

Are there facilities?

The main beach has a beach bar with sunbeds and snacks. The nude cove has nothing, so bring water and shade.
