About Wild Pear Beach
Wild Pear Beach is a small, secluded cove just east of Combe Martin on the North Devon coast, below the slopes of Little Hangman at the western edge of Exmoor. It is one of the best-known naturist beaches in the South West: British Naturism describes it as technically unofficial but says the local council recognises and accepts it as a naturist haven. The whole cove is used by nude bathers; its isolation and the hard path down keep casual visitors away. The beach is a mix of rock, sand and shingle under high cliffs, with freshwater streams running down the cliff face. Steps at the bottom of the path have been washed away by storms more than once and replaced by the National Trust. There are no facilities, so bring water and food, and allow plenty of time and energy for the climb back up.
Getting there
Start from the main car park in Combe Martin and follow the South West Coast Path east toward Little Hangman. Pass a bus-shelter-style seat, go through a gateway, and when the beach comes into view bear left onto a narrow, winding path down. The walk is about a mile, steep and strenuous both ways, with a very difficult final descent. Buses serve Combe Martin from Ilfracombe. Not suitable for wheelchairs or anyone with limited mobility.
