About Aberlady Beach

Aberlady Beach (Gullane Sands) lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian, inside the Aberlady Bay Local Nature Reserve just east of Aberlady village. British Naturism lists it as an unofficial naturist beach. Naturists use the second half of the beach, toward the headland, after walking out through the reserve. The setting is open and exposed: wide sands, dunes and saltmarsh with big views across the Forth, rather than a hidden cove, but the walk-in keeps it fairly quiet and nude bathers can usually walk to the water's edge to swim. The bay is tidal and very flat, so the sea retreats a long way at low tide. There are toilets at the car park but nothing on the beach. As a nature reserve, the dunes and birdlife should be left undisturbed, and dogs and visitors are expected to keep to paths.

Getting there

Park at the reserve car park with toilets on a bend of the A198 about a quarter of a mile east of Aberlady. Cross the wooden footbridge into the nature reserve and follow the path about half a mile to a fork; bear left to the beach, then turn right toward the headland for the naturist area. Buses between Edinburgh and North Berwick stop in Aberlady. Paths are flat but sandy; not fully wheelchair accessible.

Legal context

There is no official designation. In Scotland nudity is not a specific offence, but conduct likely to cause fear or alarm can be charged as breach of the peace or under the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010, so stay well away from clothed beach users.

Naturism at Aberlady Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
