About Ardeer Beach

Ardeer Beach is a long sandy shore on the Ayrshire coast between Stevenston and the mouth of Irvine Harbour, facing the Firth of Clyde. British Naturism lists it in its beach directory. The beach runs for about two miles in front of a high sea wall. The naturist section starts at the Burns Memorial mural painted on the sea wall and continues south-east to the rocks at the entrance to Irvine Harbour, so you need to walk past the mural before undressing. The Irvine side gives no access to this stretch; everyone comes in from the Stevenston end. It is an open sand beach with a pebbly approach, no shelter beyond the wall, and no facilities. BN notes the tide is not expected to cut walkers off; if it ever did, you could climb onto the sea wall and walk along the top.

Getting there

Leave the A78 north of Irvine onto the A738 west, then the B752 over the railway toward Ardeer. Take Caledonian Road (B752), and after the sharp right bend turn left and follow signs for the beach, Slip Nature Reserve and recycling point to the car park on the point (satnav KA20 3PW). Avoid the dirt track just before the car park. Walk 15 to 20 minutes over gorse and pebbles to the mural.

Legal context

Ardeer has no official designation. British Naturism warns explicitly not to undress in the car park, as that could lead to arrest; in Scotland, nudity likely to cause alarm can be prosecuted as breach of the peace or a public order offence. Undress only past the mural.

Naturism at Ardeer Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
