About Whiteford Sands

Whiteford Sands is the most northerly beach on the Gower Peninsula, curving for more than two miles along the edge of the Loughor estuary below Llanmadoc. The land, Whiteford Burrows, belongs to the National Trust and is a nature reserve of dunes and pine plantation, so there is no road to the beach and it stays quiet even when nearby Rhossili is busy. Naturists traditionally use the remote northern part: the usual area starts about halfway between the stile where the main path meets the beach and the disused cast-iron lighthouse at Whiteford Point. British Naturism advises against using the small dunes right by the beach, which are part of the reserve. The sand is soft and yellow, with hollows in the dunes behind giving shelter and privacy. Near the river mouth currents are strong, and the lighthouse end is cut off by the tide, so swimming needs real care. There are no facilities on the beach. Expect a long walk in, a lot of space, birdlife on the estuary and few other people.

Getting there

From M4 junction 47 take the A484, B4296 and B4295 towards Llanrhidian and Llanmadoc. At Llanmadoc church turn down Cwm Ivy Lane to the pay car park halfway down (ANPR camera, no overnight parking). Walk on down the lane, through the gate into the National Trust land and through Whiteford Burrows; take side paths left to the beach or keep on the main path to a stile on the right. Sand and dune paths; not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Naturist guides and visitors describe Whiteford as extensive, quiet and secluded, and many prefer it to busier Rhossili. The main drawbacks reported are the long walk from the car park and the distance to the naturist stretch, and the strong currents near the estuary mouth. Some guides mention local disapproval of nudity, so most visitors keep to the remote end and away from the access paths.

Legal context

Public nudity is not in itself an offence in Wales; under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (s.66) prosecution needs intent to cause alarm or distress. Whiteford is not designated; British Naturism lists it (listing updated May 2020) as traditionally used by discreet naturists, and some guides note local residents disapprove, so discretion is advised.

Naturism at Whiteford Sands sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
