About Weaselhead Flats

The clothing-optional beach at Weaselhead Flats is a gravel bar on the Elbow River at the far western edge of the Weaselhead Natural Environment Park in south-west Calgary, where the river runs into the Glenmore Reservoir. The local group Calgary Nude Recreation says it has been used for nude recreation for more than 20 years. The spot sits between the river to the south and a fence line to the north, close to the boundary with Tsuut'ina Nation land, and is screened by willow and spruce. It is unofficial, open to everyone and nudity is optional. The river here counts as part of Calgary's drinking-water reservoir, so the group says swimming is probably not allowed; most people sunbathe and wade. The water is cold, police helicopters fly over regularly, and there are no toilets or showers.

Getting there

Park at the Weaselhead Natural Area lot at 37 Street and 66 Avenue SW, which the local group says is the only legal access. Follow the paved path down until it bends hard left, then take the dirt Hummingbird Trail to the right. The walk is about 2 km, 30-40 minutes, on an unmaintained trail with washouts, a small steep ravine, logs and drop-offs above the river. Do not use Weaselhead Road or the Ring Road; both cross Tsuut'ina land. Not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

The main source is the local naturist group, which describes a quiet, friendly, mixed crowd and stresses etiquette: no photos without permission, no sexual behaviour, pack out litter. Regulars warn that the trail is rough and changes every spring, that you should dress again for exposed sections of the trail, and that the water is cold. Police air patrols are routine; comply if asked to dress.

Legal context

Public nudity is an offence under s.174 of Canada's Criminal Code, though prosecution needs the Attorney General's consent. Calgary Nude Recreation says the City refused it a permit, saying public nudity is criminal, but Daily Hive reported in 2023 that nudity there is tolerated. Calgary's parks bylaw (11M2019) bans conduct that unreasonably disturbs other users (checked 2026).

Naturism at Weaselhead Flats sits under Canada's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
