About Beechgrove Beach

Beechgrove beach is an informal clothing-optional stretch of Lake Ontario shoreline in Scarborough, at the bottom of Beechgrove Drive by East Point Park and the mouth of Highland Creek in Toronto's far east end. It is sometimes called Bare Bluffs. From the parking lot at the end of the road, paths lead down to a long, narrow beach of sand and stone backed by low bluffs and scrub. Guides mention a large rock painted to mark the nude area along the way. The Federation of Canadian Naturists says the whole long beach is unofficially clothing-optional and that most people walk well past the first point. It is secluded and fairly quiet by day, but it has a reputation as an evening party spot, and visitors repeatedly warn about broken glass in the sand, so keep footwear on. There are no lifeguards, toilets or change rooms. Toronto's only designated clothing-optional beach is Hanlan's Point on the Toronto Islands, so Beechgrove depends on discretion.

Getting there

By car, take Highway 401 to Morningside Avenue south, turn left on Lawrence Avenue East and right onto Beechgrove Drive to the parking lot at the end of the road. By TTC, buses serving Lawrence Avenue East and the Port Union area stop within walking distance. From the lot take the wider path toward the lake; near a large culvert go right and step carefully down the rocks to the shore. The path is short but uneven and not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Guides call Beechgrove secluded and good for sunbathing and swimming, but hard to find the first time. The most common warning is broken glass buried in the sand from evening parties, so shoes are advised. Visitors also stress staying on paths because the bluffs are unstable, and being discreet since clothed walkers use nearby trails.
