About Warnemünde Beach
Warnemünde, Rostock's seaside district at the mouth of the Warnow, has one of the widest beaches on the German Baltic, in places 100-200 m of fine white sand backed by a low dune and woodland. Nude bathing has deep roots here from GDR times, and the city still sets aside clear FKK sections. On the Warnemünde side the nude beach runs west from beach access 18 to access 24 towards Diedrichshagen; from 24 to 40 the beach is mixed textile and FKK, while accesses 1-18 nearest the lighthouse and cruise terminal are textile. Across the river, Markgrafenheide and Hohe Düne have further FKK stretches. The FKK strip is calmer than the crowded central beach, with a more local crowd of couples, families and older regulars, and dunes and woods behind instead of hotels. Lifeguards cover large parts of the main beach in season, but the city's beach information notes there is no water rescue on the FKK sections. Accesses 18 and 25 have firm paths to the water and entry aids for wheelchair users.
Getting there
Warnemünde is reached by S-Bahn from Rostock Hauptbahnhof (about 20 minutes). From the station or the lighthouse, walk west along the promenade and the dune path to beach access 18 (roughly 30-40 minutes), or take a bus towards Diedrichshagen and walk down to the higher-numbered accesses. Paid parking is available in Warnemünde; check the city's parking information for car parks nearer Diedrichshagen. Access 18 has a firm, non-slip path to the water in season (May-October) and accessible toilets are at the beach accesses.
What visitors say
Coverage of Warnemünde's nude beach centres on the long-running clash between nudists and clothed visitors lying in the FKK sections, which led the city to make the FKK strips nude-only in 2025; reports also mention people filming or photographing nude bathers. Regulars value the width of the beach and the quieter, dune-backed setting west of the town. Local politicians doubted whether two wardens per beach could enforce the new rule, and the beach warden has said clothing is not automatically a breach, for example on cool or sunless days.

Legal context
Rostock's beach statute (Strandsatzung) designates accesses 18 to 24 at Warnemünde/Diedrichshagen as FKK beach. An amendment passed by the city parliament in February 2025 reserves FKK sections exclusively for nude visitors and bans clothed bathing and sunbathing there, with the beach warden able to issue removal orders in case of conflict; enforcement capacity was questioned in local press.
Naturism at Warnemünde Beach sits under Germany's rules for officially designated nude beaches — explicit protection inside the marked area.
