About Vault Beach

Vault Beach, also called Bow Beach, is a cliff-backed cove on Cornwall's south coast, about 1 km south of the village of Gorran Haven, tucked between Maenease Point and Dodman Point. British Naturism lists it as well established for naturism though not official. Clothed visitors stay near the eastern end, where the access paths come down; the nude area is the western half, furthest from the path. Regulars treat a white paint mark on the rocks roughly halfway along as the informal start of the nude section, but the line moves with the crowd. The beach is a mix of coarse sand, pebbles and larger rocks, widest at the eastern end and narrowing westward; around 1 km is usually usable, and at low tide you can scramble further west over rocks. Rock outcrops give privacy and wind shelter. The beach shelves steeply, so deep water comes quickly, and seaweed can gather at the shoreline. There are no facilities on the beach.

Getting there

From Gorran Haven, where there is a public car park, follow the South West Coast Path south for about 1 km around Maenease Point; where the path turns inland uphill, take the left-hand path down to the beach. Alternatively, use the small National Trust car park at Penare (about 10 spaces, postcode PL26 6NY), reached by a narrow single-track lane with no passing places, and follow the signed footpath to the coast path, then east and down. Both walks are on good paths and fairly easy. Not wheelchair accessible.

Legal context

Vault has no official naturist designation. In England nudity is not in itself an offence; it becomes one (e.g. under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 or public order law) only with intent to cause alarm or distress, so nude bathing at an established beach like this is generally tolerated. Keep to the western end away from clothed users.

Naturism at Vault Beach sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the nude section at Vault Beach?

At the western end, away from the access paths. A white paint mark on rocks about halfway along is the informal boundary.

Where do I park?

In Gorran Haven's public car park, about 1 km walk away, or at the small National Trust car park at Penare.

Are there toilets or cafes?

Not on the beach; the nearest toilets and shops are in Gorran Haven.

Is it good for swimming?

The water is clear but the beach shelves steeply and can have seaweed, so it suits confident swimmers.
