About Umhlanga Beach

The nude beach near Durban is not on the main Umhlanga Rocks promenade but about 2 km north, at the mouth of the Ohlanga River lagoon in the 26-hectare uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. Here a wide strip of Indian Ocean sand backed by coastal dune forest has been used for nude sunbathing for years under an informal arrangement, and the press has called it KwaZulu-Natal's main nude beach. It has never been official: the eThekwini municipality said in 2013 that Durban has no nude beaches and that nudists using it were breaking city bylaws, though later reports said authorities often turned a blind eye. More walkers and families using the reserve have led to complaints about nudity and lewd behaviour. There are no lifeguards; the sea here can be rough and the lagoon and dunes are best avoided for swimming and wandering. The reserve was once notorious for crime, so go with others.

Getting there

Drive to the northern end of Lagoon Drive in uMhlanga Rocks, where a car park serves the nature reserve trails. Follow the walkway and pedestrian bridge across the lagoon and through the dune forest to the beach, then head to the area near the lagoon mouth. Alternatively, walk north along the sand from the Umhlanga Rocks beachfront. Trails are sandy with some boardwalk; the beach itself is not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Naturists describe the lagoon-mouth beach as the best-known nude spot in KwaZulu-Natal, accepted by locals and quiet on weekdays. Common warnings are the lack of lifeguards, rough surf on windy days, and not swimming in the lagoon or wandering into the dunes. Complaints from families about exhibitionism and lewd behaviour surfaced in 2013 news coverage, and some visitors note continuing antisocial conduct. Go on calm days and in company.

Legal context

South Africa has no designated nude beaches. The eThekwini municipality stated in 2013 that Durban has no nude beaches, that a nudism request had been refused and that nude bathers at Umhlanga were breaking city bylaws; later reports (2014) described tolerance rather than enforcement.

Naturism at Umhlanga Beach sits under South Africa's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
