Naturism in South Africa
South Africa permits public nudity only in designated areas. The Sexual Offences Act criminalises public indecency, but naturist beaches exist in Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. The South African Naturist Federation (SANF) works with municipalities for designated areas.

All 7 beaches →Lighthouse Beach (Great Fish River)
Informal / TraditionalThe beach below the Great Fish Point Lighthouse lies near the mouth of the Great Fish River on the Eastern Cape's Sunshine Coast, about 25 km east of Port Alfred on the road towards East London. The lighthouse, first lit in 1898, overlooks a long, quiet beach. In 2003 the Ndlambe Tourism Board proposed an official nudist beach on the stretch between the Great Fish River and Rocky Point (or alternatively at Cape Padrone), but the plan stalled over road access across private land and opposition from church groups, and was never carried out. The beach is nonetheless described by the Mail & Guardian as an unofficial nude beach where nobody bothers people who undress. It is wild and has no facilities or lifeguards, and the open Indian Ocean surf here can be rough, so swim with care.
Port Alfred Beach
Informal / TraditionalPort Alfred Beach is a nudist-friendly beach in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Nudity is optional. On-site amenities include restrooms, food & drinks, parking.
Secrets Beach
Informal / TraditionalSecrets Beach is a small, secluded stretch of coast on the Marine Drive coastline south-west of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), near the village of Schoenmakerskop in the Eastern Cape. It is not a classic sandy bathing beach: the shore is mostly rock, with pebbles, shells, small patches of sand and tidal pools, reached by footpaths down from the coastal road. It is known more as a quiet place for sunrise walks, beachcombing and rock-pool lounging than for swimming, and the sea here can be rough and unpredictable, with waves breaking over the rocks. Wind is often lighter than on other Gqeberha beaches. The beach has long been listed among South Africa's places for nude sunbathing, but in practice nudity is occasional rather than normal: visitors are mainly locals, couples, dog walkers and photographers, and the open access points and rocky layout make it awkward to find a private spot. Anyone wanting to sunbathe nude should pick a secluded hollow among the rocks and be prepared for passers-by.

Mpenjati Naturist Beach
Unofficial / ToleratedMpenjati is a stretch of beach on KwaZulu-Natal's lower South Coast, about 20 km south of Margate, at the mouth of the Mpenjati River lagoon between the village of Trafalgar to the north and Palm Beach to the south. The lagoon and its banks form the 66-hectare Mpenjati Nature Reserve, managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, with coastal forest, grassland, marsh and estuary, and the shore lies within the Trafalgar Marine Protected Area. Naturists have used the beach north of the lagoon mouth for more than 20 years. In October 2014 the then Hibiscus Coast municipality approved an application by the South African National Naturists Association and the KwaZulu-Natal naturist association to make part of the beach north of the lagoon, near Trafalgar's Blue Flag beach, the country's first official nude beach, subject to provincial and Ezemvelo approval for signs and toilets. After protests by a coalition of religious and traditional leaders, the Public Protector set the decision aside in November 2017 on procedural grounds. The beach is still used by naturists, but it has no official status. The shore is wide golden sand with Indian Ocean surf; the reserve's picnic sites on both lagoon banks have braai areas, toilets and a playground.
Sandy Bay
Unofficial / ToleratedSandy Bay is a secluded beach on Cape Town's Atlantic seaboard, just south of Llandudno on the western flank of the Karbonkelberg, inside Table Mountain National Park. It cannot be seen from the coast road to Hout Bay, and with no road access it has for decades been the city's best-known nude beach, described by local media as Cape Town's one unofficial nudist spot. The beach is a broad sweep of white sand between large granite boulders and rocky outcrops, backed by dunes and fynbos-covered slopes. The Atlantic here is cold and the surf can be strong, with rip currents, and there are no lifeguards, toilets or kiosks. Nude use is spread along the main beach and among the boulders, though in 2026 the status changed sharply: SANParks has said Sandy Bay is not a naturist beach, and new signs on the access path ban nudity. Visitors should treat nudity here as contested and liable to fines.

Bare Necessities Naturist Retreat
Private ResortBare Necessities is a small, privately run naturist farm stay in the Overberg countryside near the village of Suurbraak, east of Swellendam in the Western Cape, roughly halfway between Cape Town and George. It sits on a working smallholding (older listings mention a small dairy making its own cheese) with mountain views towards the Langeberg and the Tradouw Pass. Accommodation is limited: two en-suite rooms, each with a kitchenette, plus a converted bus known as 'Da Bus' about 100 m away with its own kitchen and bathroom, and a handful of campsites. Every unit has a private patio and braai facilities. Shared facilities include a solar-heated pool, a sauna and hot tub, an outdoor fireplace, a pool table and darts, and walking trails across the property; there is no restaurant, so guests self-cater. The retreat accepts naturists only and expects guests to be clothes-free in shared areas when the weather allows, following the codes of conduct of the Western Cape Naturist Association and the South African National Naturist Association. Its own website sums up the policy as 'where clothing free rules'. All ages are welcome and pets can be brought by arrangement.
Harmony Nature Farm
Private ResortHarmony Nature Farm is a family-oriented naturist retreat set on the cliffs of the Magaliesberg mountains west of Pretoria and Johannesburg. It offers simple self-catering chalets and naturist weekend stays in the bush, with mountain views and walking. Check current rules and booking details with the farm before travelling.
Hooting Owl Guest House
Private ResortHooting Owl is a bed and breakfast guest house a little south of Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, about a kilometre inland from the Indian Ocean. It is a normal guest house most of the time, but the whole property can be booked as a clothing-optional retreat for naturist groups on request. The nude-friendly Mpenjati naturist beach is a short drive to the south. Contact the owners in advance to arrange a naturist booking.
Kiepersolkloof
Private ResortKiepersolkloof is a private naturist nature reserve in the bushveld near Rustenburg in North West Province, described as South Africa's oldest private naturist facility. The reserve is family-oriented and has traditionally not admitted single visitors. Rates and rules may have changed, so check with the reserve before booking.
Port Nature Hout Bay Deluxe Apartments
Private ResortPort Nature Hout Bay is a small privately run clothing-optional self-catering rental in Hout Bay on the Cape Peninsula, near Sandy Bay, Cape Town's best-known nude beach. It is not a resort: listings describe a one-bedroom apartment with a queen bed and private patio plus a separate cottage, each with a fully equipped kitchen, smart TV, air conditioning and a wood-burning fireplace. Guests share a solar-heated saltwater pool. Listings say nudity is optional outdoors but required in the pool, and that guests of all ages are welcome. The property has solar backup against power cuts, fast Wi-Fi, an electric fence, an alarm and CCTV. The hosts share the exact address only after booking.
Sun Kissed Villa
Private ResortSun Kissed Villa is a small naturist guest accommodation in Hout Bay on the Cape Peninsula, south of Cape Town. It caters to naturist visitors looking for a nude-friendly base close to Sandy Bay, South Africa's best-known nude beach, which lies a short drive away near Llandudno. Details such as rooms and rates are only available through its own website, so contact it directly to confirm it still operates. Hout Bay itself has restaurants, a harbour and easy access to Chapman's Peak Drive.
SunEden Family Naturist Resort
Private ResortSunEden is a family naturist resort on a bushveld farm about 45 km north of Pretoria, in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Listings place it on a 35-hectare site, and the operator calls it a nude resort: guests are expected to be unclothed in public areas, weather permitting, rather than clothing-optional. Facilities include an outdoor solar-heated swimming pool, an EdenSpa with a hot tub, an infrared sauna and a steam bath. There are self-catering units with private patios and garden views, shared living spaces and a kitchen, a game room, a convenience shop, barbecue facilities and hiking trails. The resort is close to the Dinokeng Game Reserve, so day-trip safaris are possible. A 2014 newspaper feature named it one of the best-known naturist resorts in Gauteng. The address is not clear from the sources, and some guides give different locations. Confirm details before booking.
Striptease River Trail
Informal / TraditionalThe Striptease River Trail is a private hiking route at Tsitsikamma Lodge and Spa, a hotel of 32 free-standing log cabins in the Tsitsikamma forest on the Garden Route, at the western edge of the Eastern Cape. The trail follows a river through old indigenous forest for about 5 km and passes 11 rock pools, each with a cheeky name tracing a gradual undressing: Bikini, Topless, Bottomless, Halfway and finally Kaalgat, Afrikaans slang for bare-bottomed, with others such as Fantasy and the Cataract pool, which has waterfalls. Hikers can start fully dressed and shed a layer at each stage, or skinny-dip from the first pool. The walk typically takes around four hours with swims, though there is no time limit. Its key feature is privacy: once booked, the trail is reserved exclusively for you and your companions, which is what makes nude hiking and swimming possible. The lodge itself, with its restaurant, spa and cabins, is an ordinary clothed hotel, so the trail is a nude-friendly activity rather than a naturist venue. Summer is the best time to enjoy the pools.
