About Šútovo Lake Nude Beach

Šútovské jazero, also called the Kraľovany flooded quarry, is a former stone quarry filled with water beside the Váh river between the village of Šútovo and Rieka, part of Kraľovany, in the Žilina region of northern Slovakia. Steep, terraced quarry walls drop into clear turquoise water, with the forested ridges of the Malá Fatra all around, which gives the place a striking, almost alpine look. The water stays cooler than at lowland lakes. There are two larger beaches with easy entry into the water and several smaller, more private spots that are harder to get into and out of. One of the beaches is a fenced nudist area, and a TV JOJ report once called it Slovakia's first official nude beach. Swimming is entirely at your own risk: there is no lifeguard and the quarry is deep. On hot summer weekends the lake gets crowded, and some visitors complain about litter and noisy groups; weekdays and early mornings are calmer.

Getting there

The lake is just off the I/18 road along the Váh between Martin and Ružomberok, about 20 km from Martin; Kraľovany railway station is nearby on the main Žilina-Košice line. A large car park sits near the lake; guides describe it as free, but a 2020 visitor reported a parking fee, so bring cash. From the car park it is a short walk to the shore; paths to the smaller beaches are steep and rocky. Not suitable for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

Visitors praise the colour and clarity of the water and the mountain setting, but many note that the lake is very busy on summer weekends, with limited toilets, one snack bar and occasional litter and loud drinking groups. The nudist section is reported as separate and calmer. Bring water shoes for the rocky entries and expect the water to feel cold.

Legal context

Slovakia has no national law against nudity; municipalities can regulate it by local ordinance, as Rusovce in Bratislava has tried to do. At Šútovo a fenced section is set aside for nude bathing; no municipal ordinance designating it was found (2026), and bathing anywhere in the quarry is at your own risk.

Naturism at Šútovo Lake Nude Beach sits under Slovakia's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
