About Torrente Diaterna

The Diaterna is a clear mountain stream in the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines, in the municipality of Firenzuola (Metropolitan City of Florence), that runs down to join the Santerno river near Ca' Maggiore. Tuscany's official tourism site says naturism is practised along a stretch of the Diaterna at Scheggianico, describing it as a green area that is wild but accessible, and a regional swimming guide notes that the naturist zone is reached by walking up the course of the stream from its confluence area. This is a river spot, not a sea beach: the stream runs through a wooded valley with small gorges, little waterfalls and natural pools of clear blue water, and people sunbathe on pebble banks and rocks beside the pools. The tourism board's directions lead to a parking area just before the bridge at Scheggianico, after which everything is on foot. Water levels depend on recent rain, so pool depth varies through the summer. There are no facilities in the valley; Firenzuola, about 9 km away, has shops and cafés. The Diaterna is also used for guided 'aquatrekking' walks through its pools, so expect to meet some clothed hikers and swimmers.

Getting there

From Firenzuola, drive about 9 km toward Castel del Rio on the state road along the Santerno to Scheggianico. Just after the hamlet, before the bridge, take the road on the left, leave the car where possible in that area and continue on foot, walking up the course of the Diaterna. The approach is on informal paths and over rocks and stream banks; wear sturdy shoes, expect to wade in places and allow for uneven ground. Not wheelchair accessible; no public transport worth relying on.

Legal context

Italy has no national law on naturism and no Firenzuola ordinance designating this stretch was found; Visit Tuscany (the regional tourism board) lists it as a place where naturism is practised, so it is a tolerated, long-standing spot rather than a designated one. Since the 2016 decriminalisation, simple public nudity is an administrative matter, while lewd acts remain criminal; stay discreet near the road and the bathing areas used by families.

Naturism at Torrente Diaterna sits under Italy's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Frequently asked questions

Is nudity allowed on the Diaterna?

There is no designation, but Tuscany's official tourism site says naturism is practised on a stretch of the river at Scheggianico. The naturist zone is reached by walking up the stream.

How do I get there?

Drive about 9 km from Firenzuola to Scheggianico, take the road on the left before the bridge, park, and continue on foot up the stream.

Is it a beach?

It is a river spot: pools, small waterfalls and pebble or rock banks in a wooded valley, not a sandy beach.

Are there facilities?

No. Bring water and food; the nearest shops are in Firenzuola.

When is it best?

June to September, when the water is warm enough for swimming. Avoid it after heavy rain, when the stream rises and rocks are slippery.
