About Stadtwaldsee - FKK-Strand
The Stadtwaldsee, which Bremen residents call the Unisee, lies in the Horn-Lehe district beside the University of Bremen, between the Technologiepark and the A27 motorway, north of the Bürgerpark and Stadtwald. It was dug out as a sand pit when the motorway and the university were built. The lake covers about 29 hectares, reaches about 15 m deep and is fed by groundwater, which the city describes as slightly salty. It has two coarse sand beaches. The large textile beach is on the south side, and the city's official portal places the FKK area on the east side of the lake. A nature reserve borders part of the shore, and the lake also has a campsite, a diving base with an air station, a restaurant with a lakeside terrace, a fenced dog beach and a DLRG lifeguard station. Smaller bays elsewhere on the shore are also used for swimming. In spring 2025 the city's environmental services restored the FKK bathing spot after nutrias had undermined the bank: the shore was levelled, re-sanded and cleared of sedges, with a fence and buoy line planned to keep swimmers out of the reed belt. Algae blooms occasionally close the lake in summer.
Getting there
The lake is on the north-eastern edge of central Bremen, next to the university campus and the Technologiepark, with the A27 running along its far side. A campsite (Camping am Stadtwaldsee) sits by the lake, and the city lists sanitary facilities and a kiosk at each beach. The FKK area is on the east shore, reached on the footpaths that circle the lake from the main south beach. Specific parking and public-transport details were not confirmed from the sources used here; the university area is served by Bremen's tram and bus network.
What visitors say
Comments on lake-guide sites are few and mixed. Several visitors like the size of the lake, the DLRG station, the kiosks and the public fire pit, and call the water clean. Another complains of poor water quality and litter. The lake is busy in summer and also used by divers, surfers and triathletes in training. Detailed reports specific to the FKK beach were not found.
