About Spiaggia libera Capalbio

The free beach of Capalbio is the long, straight stretch of sand on the southern Maremma coast, in the province of Grosseto, that runs in front of the Lago di Burano, a coastal lagoon protected as a WWF oasis. Tuscany's official tourism site lists it among the region's naturist beaches, describing about 8 km of shore that, apart from by sea, can only be reached by walking along the beach. The beach is backed by dunes and Mediterranean scrub with the lagoon behind; there are no roads to the shore along the reserve, so the middle of the stretch stays quiet even in August while the access points, including the Macchiatonda area and the Chiarone end with its famous beach club, are busier and clothed. Nude bathers spread out along the empty section between the access points. The sand is fine and the water shallow; there is no shade on the beach and no services once you leave the access points.

Getting there

Leave the Aurelia (SS1) at the Macchiatonda/Chiarone exits and follow signs to the beach access points of the WWF Lago di Burano oasis, where there are regulated seasonal car parks. From there walk along the shoreline in front of the reserve to the quiet stretch; it is not reachable by road, and entering the reserve's dunes is not allowed. Expect a walk on soft sand; bars and toilets exist only at the access points.

Legal context
