About Spiaggia di Canata

Capo Canata is a small, secluded cove on the south coast of Elba at the eastern end of the Gulf of Lacona, in the municipality of Capoliveri. It sits below a headland and is reached by a steep stairway that starts inside the campsite above, which keeps it quiet. The beach is small black pebbles and gravel, with rocks either side and a rocky seabed that the Tuscan tourism board calls wonderful for snorkelling, recommending a mask. Capo Canata appears in both of the board's guides to naturist beaches in Tuscany and on Elba, and it has long been used for nude sunbathing. There are no services and little shade.

Getting there

From the left (eastern) end of Lacona beach, follow the rocks to a stairway that climbs to the campsite; at a white house, take the path down to the cove. The stairway entrance is inside the campsite, so be respectful passing through. Park at Lacona. The steps are steep and the route is unsuitable for limited mobility.

Legal context

Capo Canata is listed by the Tuscan regional tourism board in its naturist guides, but we found no municipal designation (checked 2026). Access is through private campsite grounds. Italy has no national naturism law; nudity where naturism is customary has generally not been treated by the courts as an offence against public decency, but elsewhere it can draw an administrative fine under art. 726 of the Penal Code.

Naturism at Spiaggia di Canata sits under Italy's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
