About South Gare Beach, Redcar
South Gare is the reclaimed spit and breakwater on the south side of the mouth of the River Tees, just north-west of Redcar. It was built up from blast-furnace slag, which gives the dunes an unusual lime-rich soil, and together with Coatham Sands it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. British Naturism lists the beach here as one used by naturists since the FKK movement of the 1930s, but its listing does not mark a specific nude zone; in practice that means the quieter parts of the wide sand away from the road end and the breakwater. The beach is broad and sandy, with tidal mudflats, low dunes, rocks and fresh and saltwater pools; it is popular with windsurfers, kite-surfers and anglers, who fish off the end of the breakwater, and ship-watchers. On the inner side, Bran Sands is good for birds and has the remains of a wooden wreck, and seals are sometimes seen offshore. The setting is industrial, with Teesside works in view. There are no facilities aimed at beach users, and the area is busy with other users, so naturists here are a minority.
Getting there
South Gare is reached by the South Gare Road, a private road that starts at Fisherman's Crossing at the western end of Tod Point Road in Warrenby, west of Redcar town centre. The breakwater's postcode is TS10 5NX. Parking is informal along the gare road; no charges are documented. Redcar Central station and local buses serve Redcar, from which it is a long walk along Coatham Sands. Pick a spot on the open sand away from the road end and the breakwater.
Legal context
Public nudity is not in itself an offence in England and Wales; prosecution under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (s.66) requires intent to cause alarm or distress, and the CPS/College of Policing guidance treats ordinary naturism as lawful. South Gare is not a designated naturist beach; British Naturism lists it (listing updated May 2019) based on long-standing use. It is an SSSI, so stay off sensitive dune areas.
Naturism at South Gare Beach, Redcar sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
