About Smiltynė naturist beach

Smiltynė is Klaipėda's beach on the Curonian Spit, across the narrow Klaipėda strait from the city and reached only by ferry. Its Baltic beaches are wide, fine white sand backed by pine forest and dunes, and carry the Blue Flag. Klaipėda's municipal water-safety rules (2020) define special beach types marked by signs, including a 'nudistų paplūdimys', a signed section for people of all genders without swimwear, as well as single-sex women's and men's beaches where swimwear is optional. According to Lithuanian reporting, the city has approved two nudist sections, one being a roughly 200 m stretch at Smiltynė and the other at Giruliai on the mainland, and both of the city's men-only beaches are also at Smiltynė, with women's beaches here as well. Smiltynė is quieter than the mainland beaches at Melnragė and Giruliai, partly because of the ferry crossing; the municipality has described its men's zone as lightly used. The Smiltynė beaches have changing cabins, toilets, a first-aid post and lifeguards.

Getting there

Take the pedestrian ferry from Klaipėda's Old Ferry terminal (about 1.30-1.50 EUR return for foot passengers) or the car ferry from the New Ferry terminal (about 20 EUR per car). From the Old Ferry landing it is a walk of a little over a kilometre through pine forest to the sea, on paths also suitable for bikes. Follow the beach signs to the marked nudist section. Buses from the New Ferry terminal continue south along the spit.

Legal context

Klaipėda's council rules on safe behaviour at water bodies (decision T2-143, 25 June 2020) define signed nudist, women's and men's beaches; a 2022 Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson decision confirms men's beaches exist only at Smiltynė and that the city reviewed its men's and nudist beach zones. Nudity outside the signed sections is not allowed.

Naturism at Smiltynė naturist beach sits under Lithuania's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
