About Skåtangen

Skåtangen (also spelled Skåetangen) is a rocky headland at the southern tip of Tjøme in Færder municipality, at the mouth of the Oslofjord south of Tønsberg. It lies in Moutmarka, the mainland-connected part of Færder National Park, near the well-known Verdens Ende point. The Norwegian Naturist Federation lists it as an unofficial but very popular naturist beach. It is a secluded spot suited to fit visitors. The coast here is mostly large, smooth, polished rock slabs, with many sheltered places to sunbathe and a small beach. The national park's information board recommends the viewpoint at the southern end of Skåetangen and notes that the bays on the south-west side are good for swimming. Moutmarka was bought as a public recreation area by the Oslofjord Outdoor Recreation Council in the 1950s and has a network of footpaths and a coastal trail. There is no bin, toilet or drinking water at the naturist spot, so bring everything with you and take your rubbish home.

Getting there

Drive to the southern end of Tjøme toward Verdens Ende and Moutmarka, part of Færder National Park. The park map shows car parks, a visitor centre at Verdens Ende and toilets elsewhere in the area. From there, footpaths and the coastal path lead across rocky, uneven ground to Skåetangen. The walk involves rock and rough terrain and is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Legal context

Norway has no general ban on nude bathing in places where it does not cause offence. The Norwegian Naturist Federation lists Skåtangen as an unofficial naturist beach. It lies within Færder National Park, where park rules apply. Tents are not allowed in zone C, and fires only at designated sites.

Naturism at Skåtangen sits under Norway's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
