About Scheveningen Naaktstrand

The Hague's nude beach lies on the Noorderstrand, north of the busy Scheveningen resort and its pier, beyond the Zwarte Pad beach-club strip and running toward the border with Wassenaar and the Meijendel dunes. The Hague city council adopted a stretch for nude recreation on 13 June 1975, making it one of the oldest nude beaches in the Netherlands; the original section was only about 250 metres, and today nude recreation is permitted between beach poles 98.0 and 95.7, about 2.3 km. The Hague side is signposted as far as pole 97.4, the municipal border; in practice nudity continues onto the unsigned Wassenaar part, but not near the beach entrances. The beach is wide North Sea sand with dunes behind and a series of breakwaters (strekdammen), some barely visible at low tide; swimmers must keep at least 25 metres from them. There is no lifeguard on the nude section, and the nearest rescue post is about 900 metres south. Two beach pavilions stand on the stretch. Nude and clothed visitors mix, and the zone between the pavilions is often mostly clothed, so naturists tend to head further north. Dogs are allowed on The Hague part but not on the Wassenaar part.

Getting there

From central The Hague, take a tram or bus toward Scheveningen and walk north along the beach or the dune paths past the Zwarte Pad pavilions; the nearest bus stop is roughly a 15-minute walk from the nude section. Paid parking is available about 500 metres away. Bicycle racks are provided near the beach, and cycling through the dunes is a common way to arrive. The final stretch is soft sand, and the beach is not considered suitable for wheelchair users.

What visitors say

Naturist guides describe the beach as spacious and rarely crowded, even at weekends, with the quietest nude areas toward the Wassenaar end. Several note that the stretch between the pavilions is often dominated by clothed beachgoers, which some naturists find uncomfortable. Common tips: arrive by bike, keep well away from the breakwaters when swimming, and remember there is no lifeguard on the nude section. Reviewers mention that the nearest parking is a fair walk away.

Legal context

The Hague city council designated the beach for nude recreation in 1975 (since extended to poles 98.0 to 95.7); this is reported by naturist guides, and no current municipal page was found confirming the boundaries in 2026. Nudity is customary but not required, and is not allowed on pavilion terraces.

Naturism at Scheveningen Naaktstrand sits under Netherlands's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
