About Punta del Miglio
Punta del Miglio, usually called Sassoscritto, is a stretch of rocky shore on the Romito coast just south of Livorno, below the Via Aurelia between the Sassoscritto and Romito restaurants. A signed trail drops from the road through the scrub and down steps to large flat rocks at the water's edge. It is one of Livorno's two naturist areas, together with the Calignaia cove (Punta Combara) a few hundred metres south, and the Tuscan tourism board includes Sassoscritto in its guide to naturist beaches. There is no sand: people lie on the rock shelves and swim straight into deep, very clear water over a rocky seabed that is excellent for snorkelling. There are no services and little shade. The coast is very popular with locals in July and August and at weekends, and Sassoscritto in particular is known as LGBTQ-friendly. It is a good choice for strong swimmers and people comfortable on rocks rather than for small children.
Getting there
Drive south from Livorno on the Via Aurelia (SS1) to the Romito coast. The trail entrance, marked by a sign, is between the Sassoscritto and Romito restaurants; the path (no. 12) leads down to the sea, ending in steep steps. Park along the road with care, as cars and motorbikes pass fast. Arrive in the morning on summer weekends. Wear shoes, not flip-flops, for the descent.
What visitors say
Visitors praise the clear water and snorkelling and describe a friendly, mixed and LGBTQ-friendly naturist scene on the rocks. Common complaints are the crowds and roadside parking on hot weekends. Tips: come early, bring a mat for the rocks, water and shade, and use proper shoes on the steep steps.

Legal context
Guides describe Calignaia (Punta Combara) and Sassoscritto (Punta del Miglio) as Livorno's two naturist areas, and one claims they were designated by a resolution of the city executive under mayor Nogarin (2014-2019); we did not find the resolution itself (checked 2026). Italy has no national naturism law; nudity where naturism is customary has generally not been treated by the courts as an offence against public decency, but elsewhere it can draw an administrative fine under art. 726 of the Penal Code.
Naturism at Punta del Miglio sits under Italy's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.

Naturist status confirmed against an official source on 25 October 2026.
