About Punta Combara

Punta Combara, better known as Calignaia, is a small, secluded cove on the Romito coast south of Livorno, where the Via Aurelia runs along high cliffs between Antignano and Quercianella. It lies just beyond the large road bridge over the Calignaia valley, and a stone stairway drops from the road to a tiny inlet of pebbles and flat rocks. Its hidden position has made it a naturist spot for a long time, and it is one of two naturist areas on this coast, the other being Sassoscritto (Punta del Miglio) a few hundred metres north. Several guides describe both as authorised naturist areas. The water is clear and deep close to shore, the seabed is rocky and good for snorkelling, and there is no sand. There are no services. On summer weekends this whole coast is crowded with locals and visitors, so the cove fills early.

Getting there

Drive south from Livorno on the Via Aurelia (SS1) along the Romito coast. Coming from the north, a few metres after the end of the large Calignaia bridge, a stone stairway leads down to the cove. Park along the roadside where it is safe and watch for fast traffic and motorbikes. Arrive early in July, August and on weekends. The descent is steep and uneven; wear proper shoes, not flip-flops.

What visitors say

Visitors describe Calignaia as a tiny, private-feeling cove with very clear water, popular with naturists and with a relaxed LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere along this coast. Its small size means it gets busy on summer weekends. The main tips are to come early for roadside parking, take care crossing the busy road, and bring shoes, water and a mask.

Legal context

Guides describe Calignaia (Punta Combara) and Sassoscritto (Punta del Miglio) as Livorno's two naturist areas, and one claims they were designated by a resolution of the city executive under mayor Nogarin (2014-2019); we did not find the resolution itself (checked 2026). Italy has no national naturism law; nudity where naturism is customary has generally not been treated by the courts as an offence against public decency, but elsewhere it can draw an administrative fine under art. 726 of the Penal Code.

Naturism at Punta Combara sits under Italy's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
