About Praia Grande de Pêra

Praia Grande de Pêra is a long, open beach of more than 2 km in the municipality of Silves, between Armação de Pêra to the west and Praia dos Salgados to the east. Instead of the Algarve's usual cliffs it is backed by dunes up to 300 m deep, with the Ribeira de Alcantarilha at its western end and the Lagoa dos Salgados lagoon, a well-known birdwatching site for flamingos, spoonbills and purple swamphens, at its eastern end. A yellow rock outcrop, Pedra Amarela, splits the beach into two halves. Nude sunbathing is unofficial but common; guides place it mostly in the western half beyond the yellow rock, towards the Alcantarilha stream, while some visitors describe nude use in the quieter middle stretch. The sand is golden, the sea is usually calm, and the beach is breezy, with the dunes as a windbreak. Facilities and lifeguards are concentrated near the access points, so the further you walk from them, the emptier it gets.

Getting there

From the A22 take exit 8 and follow the M524 towards Pêra, then the signs for Praia Grande. There is a large car park behind the dunes, which can fill on peak August days. A wooden boardwalk crosses the dunes to the sand, and part of the western side is wheelchair accessible. From the car park, walk west past the yellow rock for the nude area. Public transport is impractical; buses serve Armação de Pêra, a long walk west along the sand.

What visitors say

Visitors like the length and space of the beach, the dunes and the lagoon walk, and say it is easy to find a quiet spot if you walk away from the car park. Naturists describe the stretch beyond the yellow rock as relaxed and low-key. Some reviewers mention there are no toilets on the remote stretches, and the beach restaurant gets mixed reviews. Wind can be a nuisance on some afternoons.

Legal context

Portuguese law (Lei 29/94 as amended by Lei 53/2010) provides for naturist beaches to be formally designated; Praia Grande de Pêra is not on the list of official naturist beaches (2026). Nude use here is tolerated by custom rather than permitted, so stay away from the lifeguarded, family sections near the access points.

Naturism at Praia Grande de Pêra sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
