About Praia dos Pinheiros
Praia dos Pinheiros is a tiny sandy cove in the golden sandstone cliffs between Praia do Camilo and Ponta da Piedade, just south of Lagos on the Algarve. It is very sheltered, with little wind and usually calm, clear water, surrounded by the eroded rock stacks and arches that make this stretch of coast famous. The Portuguese naturist federation lists it as a tolerated naturist beach and calls it a corner of extraordinary beauty with difficult access. A request to classify it as an official naturist beach was turned down as unworkable because of the danger of cliff collapse. The whole cove is small, so nude and clothed visitors share it. There are no facilities, no lifeguard and almost no shade, and the beach can shrink a lot at high tide. Rockfalls are a recurring risk along these cliffs, so keep away from the cliff base.
Getting there
From Lagos, follow the road toward Ponta da Piedade; the cliff-top boardwalks and paths link the viewpoints between Praia do Camilo and the lighthouse. The beach is reached by a steep, rough flight of steps and tracks cut into the cliff, described as difficult, so wear sturdy shoes and avoid it if you are unsteady on your feet. Parking is in the Ponta da Piedade area, which fills in summer. Rockfalls have destroyed stairs at nearby beaches, so check local signs before descending. Not wheelchair accessible.
What visitors say
Guides describe a beautiful, secluded and wind-sheltered cove, popular with naturists precisely because it is hard to reach. The steep descent is the main complaint and the reason crowds stay away. Visitors recommend low tide, sturdy footwear, water and sun protection, and caution near the cliffs.

Legal context
Not an official naturist beach: Portuguese law allows naturism formally only at designated beaches, and the federation says Pinheiros cannot be designated because of rockfall danger. It is listed by the Federação Portuguesa de Naturismo as tolerated; no enforcement against nude bathers was found (checked 2026).
Naturism at Praia dos Pinheiros sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
