About Praia do Rio Alto

Praia do Rio Alto, also known as Praia da Estela, is a long, undeveloped beach in the parish of Estela at the northern end of Póvoa de Varzim municipality, north of Porto, where the small Rio Alto reaches the Atlantic. It is considered the main naturist beach of northern Portugal, although it has no official status. The Portuguese Naturist Federation (FPN) lists 'Estela (Rio Alto)' among its tolerated beaches: the naturist zone lies to the north, running along the Estela golf course, on a very extensive beach with dunes that offer many sheltered places to spend the day out of the wind. The sand is wide and backed by a protected dune system, with a campsite nearby. Expect the conditions of the northern coast: cold water, frequent strong northerly winds and a sea that is seldom calm. Services are limited, which keeps the naturist end quiet, and the crowd is a mix of naturists and clothed beachgoers, with naturist groups meeting here regularly in summer.

Getting there

Take the N13 north from Póvoa de Varzim; at Aguçadoura follow the signs for the football ground (campo de futebol) and park at the end of Rua do Campo de Futebol. From there walk onto the beach and head north along the sand, past the golf course, to reach the naturist area. Póvoa de Varzim is on the Porto Metro (line B), but the beach is several kilometres from the nearest station. Soft sand and dune paths; not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Visitors and naturist groups describe Rio Alto as the best-known naturist spot in the north, with a quiet, spread-out crowd in the dunes. Common complaints are the cold Atlantic water, strong northern wind and lack of nearby services; the dunes provide shelter on windy days.

Legal context

Portugal's naturism law (Lei 29/94, revised in 2010) allows nudity only in areas a municipality has designated, and this beach is not among the nine official naturist beaches listed by the FPN in 2026. The FPN lists it as a 'tolerated' beach where naturist use is customary alongside clothed bathers; we found no reports of enforcement, but nudity here is customary rather than authorised.

Naturism at Praia do Rio Alto sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Naturist status confirmed against an official source on 24 October 2026.

Where is the nudist area?

North of the access at the end of Rua do Campo de Futebol, along the stretch beside the Estela golf course.

Where can I park?
