About Praia do Rei Cortiço

Praia do Rei Cortiço is a cliff-backed Atlantic beach in Caldas da Rainha municipality, Leiria district, a short distance south of Foz do Arelho and the mouth of the Óbidos lagoon. Unlike the broad lagoon beach at Foz do Arelho, it is a narrower strip of sand beneath high, eroded cliffs with rock formations and coves that give some privacy. The Portuguese Naturist Federation (FPN) lists Rei Cortiço among its tolerated beaches, mentioning its large cliffs and corners favoured by nudists. Use is mixed: many visitors stay clothed, and nude bathers tend to settle in the quieter recesses along the cliff base rather than near the main access. The sea is exposed and can have a heavy swell, so swimming is not always safe. In summer a beach guide reports lifeguards, a kiosk and showers at the access point, though services are seasonal and should not be relied on outside the bathing season.

Getting there

From Foz do Arelho, follow the coast road south towards Nadadouro and the signs for Rei Cortiço; a dirt track of just over 1 km leads to an unpaved car park above the beach. From there a path descends to the sand. There is no practical public transport to the beach itself; Caldas da Rainha has bus and rail links, then a taxi. The descent and soft sand make it unsuitable for wheelchairs.

What visitors say

Visitors describe a scenic, fairly quiet beach where nudity is accepted though many people remain clothed. The cliffs and rock formations are the main draw, with sheltered spots for nude sunbathing. Warnings concern the strong swell and the seasonal nature of the snack bar and other services.

Legal context

Portugal's naturism law (Lei 29/94, revised in 2010) allows nudity only in areas a municipality has designated, and this beach is not among the nine official naturist beaches listed by the FPN in 2026. The FPN lists it as a 'tolerated' beach where naturist use is customary alongside clothed bathers; we found no reports of enforcement, but nudity here is customary rather than authorised.

Naturism at Praia do Rei Cortiço sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
