About Praia do Palheirão

Praia do Palheirão is a remote Atlantic beach in Cantanhede municipality, Coimbra district, between Praia de Mira to the north and Praia da Tocha to the south. It sits on an undeveloped stretch of the central coast where the beach is backed by high dunes and the state pine forest, with several kilometres of unbroken sand; Cantanhede council describes it as a natural refuge set between dune and forest and promotes it among its 'Praia Dourada' quality beaches. The Portuguese Naturist Federation (FPN) lists Palheirão among its tolerated beaches, describing a very pleasant beach with an extensive sand flat and clean water that forms shallow pools at low tide, and notes that it is very quiet. Nude bathers spread out along the sand away from the small access point, sharing the beach with clothed visitors. This is the cold, open Atlantic, so the water is chilly and waves can be strong. Facilities are few: a seasonal beach bar has been reported, but there is much less infrastructure than at Tocha or Mira.

Getting there

Palheirão is reached only by car or bike. From the IC1/N109, turn west at Ermida and continue to the end of the road; alternatively, from the Tocha beach road turn north onto a dirt road about 500 m before the beach and follow it to Palheirão, or drive south from Praia de Mira along the road by the campsites. There is informal parking near the beach access, which fills on summer weekends, so arrive early. A short walk over the dunes leads to the sand; not wheelchair accessible.

What visitors say

Guides describe Palheirão as quiet and unspoilt, with long empty sand, dunes and forest and few services, which is why naturists favour it. The main drawbacks mentioned are the cold Atlantic water, wind and the lack of public transport; parking can be tight on peak summer days.

Legal context

Portugal's naturism law (Lei 29/94, revised in 2010) allows nudity only in areas a municipality has designated, and this beach is not among the nine official naturist beaches listed by the FPN in 2026. The FPN lists it as a 'tolerated' beach where naturist use is customary alongside clothed bathers; we found no reports of enforcement, but nudity here is customary rather than authorised.

Naturism at Praia do Palheirão sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
