About Praia do Norte

Praia do Norte is the long, exposed Atlantic beach immediately north of the Nazaré headland (Sítio) in Leiria district, world-famous for the giant winter waves produced by the Nazaré submarine canyon. Away from the lighthouse at the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo, where crowds gather to watch big-wave surfing, the beach runs north for several kilometres as a wide strip of sand backed by dunes and pine forest. The Portuguese Naturist Federation (FPN) lists 'Nazaré-Norte' among its tolerated beaches, describing it as a wild beach with very rough sea north of Nazaré; nudity takes place informally among the dunes and on the quieter sand further from the headland, mixed with clothed visitors. The sea here is genuinely dangerous: strong currents and heavy shore break make swimming unwise on most days, and there is no lifeguard on the naturist stretch. Visitors who want to swim are usually pointed to the guarded town beach, Praia da Nazaré, south of the headland. Facilities are minimal along the open beach.

Getting there

From Nazaré, take the road up to Sítio and follow the N242 and the signs for the lighthouse and Praia do Norte; there is free parking on the clifftop and along tracks near the beach. From the parking areas, paths lead down through the dunes onto the sand, and the quieter stretches are a walk north along soft sand. Nazaré has regular intercity buses from Lisbon and Leiria, but there is no convenient bus to the open beach. Not wheelchair accessible beyond the viewpoints.

What visitors say

Reports describe a relaxed, mostly local crowd who are indifferent to whether others are nude or clothed, with plenty of secluded spots among the dunes. The recurring warning is the sea: currents and waves are dangerous, and visitors suggest swimming at the guarded Nazaré town beach instead. There are few or no facilities on the open beach.

Legal context

Portugal's naturism law (Lei 29/94, revised in 2010) allows nudity only in areas a municipality has designated, and this beach is not among the nine official naturist beaches listed by the FPN in 2026. The FPN lists it as a 'tolerated' beach where naturist use is customary alongside clothed bathers; we found no reports of enforcement, but nudity here is customary rather than authorised. The beach is also subject to frequent maritime authority warnings about dangerous surf.

Naturism at Praia do Norte sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
