About Praia do Furadouro

Praia do Furadouro is the long Atlantic beach of Ovar, in Aveiro district, about 40 km south of Porto between Espinho and Aveiro. The resort of Furadouro sits at the centre of a nearly continuous strip of sand backed by dunes and the coastal pine forest (Mata do Furadouro). According to the Portuguese Naturist Federation (FPN), nude bathing takes place on the northern side, between the dunes and close to the forest, away from the promenade and lifeguarded swimming zone in front of the town. A Portuguese leisure guide likewise describes the northern part of the beach as used for nudism, and a beach guide says naturism is common here. The beach is wide, flat and sandy, but this is the cold, rough Atlantic of northern Portugal: the water is chilly even in August and currents can be strong. The central beach in front of Furadouro has the usual resort services in the bathing season (mid-June to mid-September), while the naturist stretch to the north has none. It is an informal, mixed area rather than a designated naturist beach.

Getting there

Furadouro is about 4 km west of Ovar town, reached by road from the A29 or the N109; Ovar has a railway station on the Porto-Aveiro line, a short taxi ride from the beach. Park in or near Furadouro and walk north along the sand, or use one of the tracks through the pine forest north of the resort. The naturist area is a walk of some minutes on soft sand from the end of the promenade and is not wheelchair accessible.

Legal context

Portugal's naturism law (Lei 29/94, revised in 2010) allows nudity only where a municipality has designated a naturist area, and this beach is not one of the nine official naturist beaches listed by the FPN in 2026. It is on the FPN's list of 'tolerated' beaches where naturists customarily share the sand with clothed bathers; we found no reports of enforcement, but nudity here is customary rather than authorised.

Naturism at Praia do Furadouro sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.
