About Praia do Abano
Praia do Abano is a small wild cove on the Atlantic coast just north of Praia do Guincho, in Cascais municipality and inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, about 30 km west of Lisbon. It is a short strip of fine pale sand enclosed by rocky cliffs, reached down a dirt road through a pine grove, and is not visible from the main coast road. The beach is sheltered from view but the sea is exposed to the strong northerly winds and heavy Atlantic swell of this coast, which also draws surfers and kitesurfers. The Portuguese Naturist Federation (FPN) includes Abano on its list of tolerated beaches where nude and clothed bathers customarily share the sand, and a Cascais beach guide says naturism is very common here. It is not an official naturist beach. Abano is far quieter than neighbouring Guincho, even in summer. A restaurant with a sea-view terrace stands by the access road. There are no lifeguards or safety flags, and the surf makes it better for sunbathing than for swimming.
Getting there
Take the coast road (N247) from Cascais past Guincho toward Malveira da Serra, then turn west at the sign for Praia do Abano onto a dirt road through the pines; it is passable in a normal car if driven slowly, but has potholes. There is a parking area by the beach, charged at roughly €1-2 per hour in high season according to a 2020s guide. A car is the practical way to get there. Access to the sand is over rough ground; closed shoes help.

Legal context
Portugal's naturism law (Lei 29/94, revised in 2010) allows nudity only where a municipality has designated a naturist area, and this beach is not one of the nine official naturist beaches listed by the FPN in 2026. It is on the FPN's list of 'tolerated' beaches where naturists customarily share the sand with clothed bathers; we found no reports of enforcement, but nudity here is customary rather than authorised.
Naturism at Praia do Abano sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Naturist status confirmed against an official source on 24 October 2026.
