About Praia de Area Maior
Area Maior, also known as Louro, is a wild beach of white sand about 1.5 km long at the foot of Monte Louro, just outside the town of Muros on the Costa da Morte side of the Muros-Noia estuary in A Coruña. Behind it lies a dune ridge reaching about 14 m in height, and behind that the Xalfas lagoon, a protected wetland in the Natura 2000 network. The small Negro river cuts the beach in two. It faces open Atlantic, so the water is often rough and windy; lifeguards are present in summer. Facilities are simple: a large car park, a wooden boardwalk and a shower part-way along it. The beach is quiet and rarely crowded. The Spanish Naturist Federation lists it as a nudist beach, and other guides describe it as nudist, though at least one list of Muros nude beaches omits it. Clothed and nude visitors share the long beach.
Getting there
The beach is about 100 m from the road that leads out of Muros towards Louro (C-550). A large car park suitable for campervans sits behind the dunes, connected to the beach by a wooden boardwalk. Stay on the boardwalk across the protected dunes. There is no step-free access onto the sand.
