About Praia das Pedras Negras

Praia das Pedras Negras is a long, wild sandy beach on the Leiria coast in Marinha Grande municipality, north of São Pedro de Moel and between Praia Velha and Vieira de Leiria. It lies at the edge of the vast Leiria pine forest (Pinhal de Leiria), with a broad strip of pale sand backed by dunes and pines; the only signs of development are a dirt road, wooden walkways and a small beach bar. The Portuguese Naturist Federation (FPN) lists Pedras Negras among its tolerated beaches, noting roughly 10 km of open sand along this stretch, reached by tracks through the pine forest. A local beach guide also says naturism is very common here and at neighbouring Olho do Samouco. Because the beach is so long, nude bathers simply walk away from the access point to find space; clothed and nude visitors share the shore. This is the open Atlantic of central Portugal: the water is cold and the surf can be strong, and the beach is not reliably lifeguarded, so swim with care. Away from summer weekends it is quiet.

Getting there

From Marinha Grande take the road toward São Pedro de Moel, then head north along the coast road toward Praia Velha and continue; the FPN suggests taking one of the tracks that cut through the pine forest to the sand. There is free unpaved parking close to the beach and the walk to the sand is short, over boardwalks and dunes. There is no practical public transport to this stretch. Soft sand makes it unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Legal context

Portugal's naturism law (Lei 29/94, revised in 2010) allows nudity only where a municipality has designated a naturist area, and this beach is not one of the nine official naturist beaches listed by the FPN in 2026. It is on the FPN's list of 'tolerated' beaches where naturists customarily share the sand with clothed bathers; we found no reports of enforcement, but nudity here is customary rather than authorised.

Naturism at Praia das Pedras Negras sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pedras Negras an official nudist beach?

No. It is listed by the Portuguese Naturist Federation as a tolerated beach where nude bathing is customary, not as an official naturist beach.

Where should I go to be nude?

Walk away from the main access along the long beach; the stretch is about 10 km of sand, so finding a quiet spot is easy.

Is there parking?

Yes, free unpaved parking near the beach, a short walk from the sand.

Is the sea safe for swimming?

It is the open Atlantic, cold and often rough, and the beach may not be lifeguarded, so swim with caution.
