About Praia das Furnas
Praia das Furnas is a small, isolated cove on the western Algarve coast in Vila do Bispo municipality, between Praia do Zavial to the west and Praia da Figueira to the east, within the Costa Vicentina natural park. It sits at the mouth of a valley between two cliffs and is only about 180 metres long and 50 metres wide. The sand is fairly coarse, with pebbles and more rock on the western side, and a seasonal stream reaches the beach. The name comes from the caves (furnas) worn into the eastern cliffs; they are the only natural shade, and this eastern end is where naturists usually settle. At low tide you can walk east to a tiny hidden beach between rock pinnacles, though the tide can cut you off on the way back. Nudity here is customary rather than designated: the Portuguese Naturist Federation lists Furnas among its tolerated beaches, the Clube Naturista do Algarve has named it among Algarve nude beaches, and beach guides call it an unofficial nude beach. Because the road in is so poor, only a handful of people come even in summer, and in winter it is often empty. The seabed is uneven and slippery and waves can be unpredictable, so swimming needs care.
Getting there
Leave the N125 at Figueira (the turn signed for the Spa da Floresta and Quinta dos Carriços camping), pass through Figueira village and continue on the dirt track for about 2.5 km, keeping left at forks. The track is narrow, rutted and full of loose stones, and the FPN warns it can be impassable after rain; drive slowly. It ends at a car park for roughly 100 cars above the beach, next to an old ruined house, with a short walk down. There is no public transport. The descent is rough and unsuitable for wheelchairs. Cliff paths continue west toward Zavial and Ingrina.
What visitors say
Visitors describe Furnas as a genuinely secluded spot where you may share the beach with only a few others, even in high season. The main complaint is the access road, which is slow, rough and hard on low cars. Guides recommend bringing all food, water and shade, wearing water shoes for the rocks, and timing a walk to the hidden eastern cove for low tide. Early morning, late afternoon and sunset are suggested as the best times.

Legal context
Portugal's naturism law (Lei 29/94, revised in 2010) allows nudity only where a municipality has designated a naturist area, and this beach is not one of the nine official naturist beaches listed by the FPN in 2026. It is on the FPN's list of 'tolerated' beaches where naturists customarily share the sand with clothed bathers; we found no reports of enforcement, but nudity here is customary rather than authorised.
Naturism at Praia das Furnas sits under Portugal's rules for traditional tolerance — custom more than statute.

Frequently asked questions
Is nudity allowed at Praia das Furnas?
It is not an official naturist beach, but the Portuguese Naturist Federation lists it as a tolerated beach and naturists use it regularly, mainly at the eastern end by the caves.
Can I drive to the beach?
Yes, via a 2.5 km dirt track from Figueira village to a car park above the beach. The track is rough and may be impassable after rain.
Are there any facilities?
No. There are no toilets, showers, bar, sunbeds or lifeguards, so bring everything you need, including shade.
Is it suitable for children?
Guides do not recommend it for young children because of the rocky access, uneven seabed and lack of facilities.
