About Porthluney Bay

Porthluney Cove is a sheltered sandy beach on Cornwall's south coast between Mevagissey and Portloe, directly below Caerhays Castle, whose parkland runs down to the road behind the beach. British Naturism includes it in its directory of naturist beaches but gives little detail, describing it simply as a sheltered sandy beach with a large car park, shared with visitors to the castle, and toilets. The cove is a popular family beach in summer, so any nude use is informal and best kept to the quieter edges away from the car park, out of season or early and late in the day. There is no recognised naturist section, so be discreet and expect clothed visitors.

Getting there

Porthluney is on the minor coastal road between Mevagissey and Portloe, at Caerhays. A large car park sits directly behind the beach (shared with Caerhays Castle visitors), with toilets; the beach is a few steps away and is one of the easier coves in the area to reach. The South West Coast Path also passes through.

Legal context

There is no designation scheme for nude beaches in England and Wales and nudity in itself is not an offence; the Sexual Offences Act 2003 exposure offence requires intent to cause alarm or distress. Porthluney has no official naturist status and is a busy family beach in summer; British Naturism's listing (2020) gives no notes on enforcement or conflicts.

Naturism at Porthluney Bay sits under United Kingdom's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
