About Playón de Bayas

Playón de Bayas, also called El Sablón, is the longest beach in Asturias: about 6 km of sand from Soto del Barco to the village of Bayas in Castrillón. 'Sablón' comes from the Asturian word for sand. The sand is dark but very fine, so it is good for long walks and runs barefoot. Behind it is one of the region's best dune systems, and together with La Deva island just offshore it is protected as a natural monument. The surf is strong. Nude bathers use the beach extensively, and FEN treats the whole strand as nude-tradition; some guides split it into zones (Los Quebrantos to the west, Requexinos to the east), but those names are not signposted. Lifeguards cover it at weekends and there are showers. Wild camping happens but is not permitted. The Asturian naturist association ANAPA particularly recommends it.

Getting there

Take the road to Asturias Airport. About 2 km before the airport, turn off for Santa María del Mar, and shortly before the village take the turning signposted Playón de Bayas. There is a car park close to the beach and a short walk through the dunes to the sand.
