About Playa Zona NUDISTA LA SALVAJE
Barinatxe, better known as La Salvaje, is a wide, open beach on the Uribe Kosta coast north of Bilbao, shared between the municipalities of Getxo and Sopela and framed by high cliffs. It is about 750 m long and very deep at low tide, with golden and darker sand, and strong Atlantic surf; it is one of the Basque Country's main surf beaches, home to local surf schools and clubs. Services include a multi-purpose building with changing rooms and showers, and lifeguards from 11:00 to 20:00 in summer. The Basque government's tourism site states that the beach has a naturist zone, and Sopela's tourism office notes that nudism is practised at one end, where an international nude race is also held each year. Guides place the nude bathers along the left-hand (western, Getxo) side of the beach, below the cliffs. The crowd is young and mixed, with many clothed surfers. Strong currents are common, so swim with care.
Getting there
Barinatxe is reached from the Getxo-Sopela coast road, with parking on the clifftop and a path or steps down to the sand. The Bilbao Metro (line 1) stops at Larrabasterra/Sopela, from where you walk to the beach. The descent from the cliffs is steep in places. For the nude area, head to the left-hand end when facing the sea.
What visitors say
Guides describe La Salvaje as a lively surf beach with a young crowd and a long-established nude section along one side. Visitors praise the cliffs and space at low tide, and warn about strong currents and waves. Not everyone at the nude end is nude, and the atmosphere is mixed.
