About Playa Sonabia
Sonabia, also known as Valdearenas or Playa de la Ballena, lies in the municipality of Liendo in eastern Cantabria, between Laredo and Castro Urdiales (it is often wrongly assigned to Castro). It is one of Spain's oldest nudist beaches, with a long-established naturist tradition. The beach is a wide bay of golden sand, about 150 m long but up to 120 m deep at low tide, enclosed by green hills and dominated by a rocky headland shaped like a whale. A freshwater spring rises in the middle of the sand. The surrounding cliffs of Candina host a rare colony of griffon vultures nesting by the sea, and the area is protected under the eastern Cantabrian mountains plan. Swell is moderate but can be strong; FEN reports a lifeguard in season, though other guides describe no services. Nude bathers are in the majority, with clothed visitors a minority, and it can be busy on summer weekends.
Getting there
Leave the N-634 or the A-8 at the Oriñón junction and follow the narrow road about 3 km towards El Pontarrón and Sonabia. Cars cannot reach the sand; there is a small unsupervised parking area for fewer than 50 vehicles, from which paths lead down to the beach. Parking fills early on summer weekends. There is no public transport to the beach and no step-free access.
What visitors say
Visitors and guides describe Sonabia as one of the pioneering nude beaches in Spain, with a strong naturist majority and stunning scenery. The small car park, the walk and strong waves on some days are the common caveats. Opinions differ on how crowded it gets: some call it quiet, others busy in high season.

Amenities
Legal context
Nudity is not prohibited on Cantabrian beaches. Sonabia's nudist status rests on decades of custom recognised by the Spanish Naturist Federation, not on a municipal designation. The surroundings are a protected natural area (2026).
Naturism at Playa Sonabia sits under Spain's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
Full country law: Spain public nudity guide.
Naturist status confirmed against an official source on 24 October 2026.
