About Playa Gorrondatxe
Gorrondatxe, also called Azkorri, is a wide beach of dark sand and rock below high cliffs in Getxo, just north of Bilbao, between the end of the Galea cliffs and Punta Azkorri. FEN lists it as about 850 m long and over 100 m deep at low tide, with strong surf, medium use, a lifeguard and showers. The cliffs here are part of a geological site known for its rock layers. It is one of the classic naturist beaches of the Basque Country, used by nude and clothed bathers, surfers and walkers. Basic services including toilets, cleaning and food and drink are available in summer. The surf is powerful, so swim only in guarded areas.
Getting there
Drive to the Kurtze neighbourhood of Getxo and follow Gorrondatxe Bidea to the car park above the beach; from there a path and steps lead down the cliff. Bilbao metro stations in Getxo are within a longer walk or a bus ride. The descent rules out wheelchair access.
