About Playa el Sombrerico
El Sombrerico and the adjoining Castillo de Macenas beach lie south of Mojácar on the Almería coast, beyond the end of the seafront development, where the coast road turns into a track towards Carboneras. FEN's page covers Castillo de Macenas, an isolated beach of about 1.4 km of rock, gravel and dark sand, named after the 18th-century coastal fort that overlooks it, and notes that it continues into El Sombrerico. Mojácar's municipal tourism site describes Cala del Sombrerico as a beautiful mix of volcanic rock and sand, a specially protected beach where naturism is permitted, deliberately left without facilities. Visitor numbers are moderate; wind can make the sea choppy.
Getting there
Follow the coast road south from Mojácar Playa past the Macenas castle; the road becomes an unpaved track along the shore towards Carboneras, with informal roadside parking near the coves. There are no services, lifeguards or shade, and camping is not allowed anywhere on the shore. Not suitable for wheelchairs.
