About Playa El Muerto
El Muerto is the naturist beach of Almuñécar on Granada's Costa Tropical, just west of the town beyond Cotobro, between the San José headland and the Peñón del Lobo. It is really two small beaches linked by a path, about 400 m in total, made of gravel with some coarse sand that keeps the water very clear and good for snorkelling. Cliffs shelter it, and a hidden spring gives the back of the beach unusually lush vegetation; visitors report seeing chameleons. A fishermen's path continues to the lighthouse at Punta de la Mona. A local naturist association federated with FEN looks after the beach and FEN reports that a sunbed and umbrella rental operates here in summer. On summer weekends you may find more clothed visitors than nude ones.
Getting there
Drive or walk west along Almuñécar's seafront for about 2 km to Cotobro beach and park there. From the end of Cotobro, a footpath around the headland leads to El Muerto in a few minutes. There are no toilets or bars on the beach. Not suitable for wheelchairs.
Amenities
Legal context
Spain has no national law against public nudity. FEN reports that the Andalusian regional government recognises El Muerto's naturist use (we did not see this on an official page); it is cared for by a local naturist association. No ban (checked 2026).
Naturism at Playa El Muerto sits under Spain's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
Full country law: Spain public nudity guide.
Naturist status confirmed against an official source on 24 October 2026.
