About Playa del Vilar
O Vilar is a huge, wild Atlantic beach on the Barbanza peninsula in the municipality of Ribeira, inside the Corrubedo Dunes and Carregal and Vixán Lagoons Natural Park. Together with the adjoining sections of Anguieiro, Río do Mar and A Ladeia it forms more than 4 km of white sand, backed by one of Galicia's most important dune systems. The surf and wind are usually strong and the water is cold, with currents that can be dangerous. Lifeguards cover part of the beach in summer and it holds a Blue Flag, but it never feels crowded. Nudity is legal anywhere on the beach and nude bathers are found along much of it, but the most nudist area is reached by taking the boardwalk branch that heads into the dunes and then walking towards the large rock outcrops; other guides place the nude zone in the western part among the dunes or behind the rocks. The Spanish Naturist Federation lists O Vilar among its nudist-tradition beaches.
Getting there
Drive from Ribeira or Corrubedo to the O Vilar car park, where there is a restaurant and a pine wood with picnic tables. Wooden boardwalks cross the protected dunes; take the branch that goes deeper into the dunes and, on reaching the sand, walk towards the large rocks for the nudist area. Allow 10-15 minutes. Stay on the boardwalks, as the dunes are strictly protected.
What visitors say
Guides describe O Vilar as one of Galicia's great wild beaches, with plenty of space even in August. Visitors praise the dunes and the boardwalks but warn about cold water, wind and strong currents. Accounts differ on where the nude zone is, variously placed in the western dunes or behind the rocks, while naturist sources say nude bathing is fine on any part of the beach.
