About Playa del Barronal
Barronal is a 500 m beach of fine sand inside the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in Almería, a short way west of the better-known Mónsul and Genoveses beaches. Dark volcanic rock frames the bay, and FEN describes the sand as darkened by basalt, though official listings call it golden. It is the area's classic nude beach. It drew a hippie crowd from early on and, according to FEN, was used by nude bathers even before nudity was decriminalised in Spain. Beyond the main bay a chain of smaller coves, the Calas del Barronal, continues along the coast, and they are also popular with nude bathers. The water is usually calm and clear. There are no buildings, lifeguards or bars. In summer it gets busy, with large numbers of day-trippers and boats anchoring offshore, and FEN has called for better management to protect its naturist character. Visit early or out of season for quiet.
Getting there
From San José, follow the dirt road towards Mónsul. In summer (roughly late June to late September) cars are limited by a barrier and charged a fee, about 6 euros per car in recent seasons, and are only let in while spaces remain; at other times parking is free. From the parking, a wide footpath of a little over 800 m leads to the beach. You can also walk along the coast from Genoveses via Cala Chica, or cross the headland from Mónsul. There is no shade on the way.
What visitors say
Visitors rate Barronal as one of the most beautiful beaches in Cabo de Gata, praising the clear water, the dramatic volcanic setting and the nude-friendly atmosphere. Common complaints are summer crowds, the regulated paid parking, boats close to shore and the lack of any shade or services. Many recommend coming early, bringing plenty of water, and exploring the small coves beyond the main beach for more privacy.

Amenities
Legal context
Spanish law does not prohibit public nudity, and FEN notes that nudism is legal on any Spanish beach; this beach is on FEN's list of beaches with a traditional nude use. It is not a signposted naturist zone; summer car access is regulated by the natural park (fees and quotas checked for recent seasons up to 2026).
Naturism at Playa del Barronal sits under Spain's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
