About Playa de Somocuevas
Somocuevas is a small cove on the Costa Quebrada, the broken, cliff-lined coast west of Santander, near the village of Liencres in the municipality of Piélagos, Cantabria. It is only about 100 m long but has fine golden sand and a gently shelving entry to the sea, and a large rocky spur shelters it from the open Atlantic, so the swell is usually moderate. Strange eroded rock formations and sea stacks surround the beach, making it one of the most admired coves of the Costa Quebrada. The proportion of nude bathers is high, and the Spanish Naturist Federation lists it among its nudist-tradition beaches; the national tourism portal also notes that nudism is practised. That said, it is not formally designated, and in peak summer the mix of nude and clothed visitors is noticeable. There are no bars or other services on the sand, though FEN reports a lifeguard in season. The cove can get busy on hot days because of its size.
Getting there
From Liencres follow the local signs for Somocuevas to a small car park on the clifftop. A short path along the cliff edge leads to a long wooden staircase of around 139 steps down to the sand. The climb back is tiring, and the steps make the beach unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Santander is about 11-15 km away.
What visitors say
Visitors describe Somocuevas as one of the prettiest coves on the Costa Quebrada, praising the rock formations and the sheltered sand. The long staircase is the main complaint, and the lack of services means bringing everything with you. Naturist sources describe a high share of nude bathers, while other guides stress it is not officially nudist and expect a mixed crowd.
