About Playa De Sakoneta
Sakoneta is a wild cove on the Gipuzkoa coast in the municipality of Deba, part of the Basque Coast Geopark between Deba and Zumaia. It is famous for its flysch: layers of tilted rock that the sea has planed into long, ridged platforms, exposed spectacularly at low tide. The beach is about 450-500 m long and consists of boulders, rock shelves and pockets of stone rather than sand, set beneath tall cliffs. There are no services, the Atlantic surf is usually strong and the place is often windy. Few people make the walk, and its quiet has made it a long-standing naturist refuge; the Spanish Naturist Federation lists it as a beach of nudist tradition, and visitors report that nudity is common among the few sunbathers. At high tide much of the shore disappears and waves break against the cliff, so timing matters. The geology draws walkers and photographers as well as sunbathers.
Getting there
Sakoneta can only be reached on foot. From Deba, drive towards the Itziar area and the Mendata/Sakoneta rural lane, park where permitted, then walk about 20 minutes down a steep track to the shore. It can also be reached on the GR-121 coastal path between Deba and Zumaia. Slopes are steep, so the beach is unsuitable for people with limited mobility; Zumaia runs boat trips along the flysch as an alternative. Check tide tables and aim for low tide.
What visitors say
Visitors are struck mainly by the flysch platforms and the remoteness. Guides stress the steep walk, the lack of sand and services, and the need to check tides, since the beach almost vanishes at high water. Nude sunbathing is described as normal and relaxed among the small number of people who come.

Legal context
Nudity is not prohibited on Basque beaches and Sakoneta's nude use is customary; the Spanish Naturist Federation lists it as a nudist-tradition beach. It lies within a protected geopark and biotope, so collecting rocks or fossils is not allowed. No enforcement against nudity was found (2026).
Naturism at Playa De Sakoneta sits under Spain's rules for de facto tolerance — usually left alone if you keep it non-sexual and low-drama.
