About Playa de Peñarrubia

Peñarrubia is Gijón's best-known nude beach, a cove of fine, tan-coloured sand about 550 m long beneath high cliffs at Alto del Infanzón, east of the city in the Somió/La Providencia area, west of Cabo San Lorenzo. It is about 4.6 km from Gijón's marina but feels removed from the city because of the cliffs. It is busy in summer, popular with locals, and the Spanish Naturist Federation lists it as a nudist-tradition beach. The cliffs give shade in the morning. The seabed is rocky in places, and FEN notes that water quality has been poor at times, making swimming less advisable; check current bathing-water reports. The beach has showers and cleaning, and rescue staff in summer. Rockfalls from the cliffs occasionally close parts of the beach or its access.

Getting there

Drive to the Alto del Infanzón area east of Gijón, where there is a small car park (fewer than 50 spaces), then descend a steep path and steps down the cliff to the sand. City bus lines 14 and 25 reach La Providencia nearby. The climb back is tiring, and the beach is not wheelchair-accessible. Check for closures after rockfalls.
