About Playa de Montaña Roja
Playa de Montaña Roja is a small cove at the foot of Montaña Roja, the red volcanic cone (171 m) that rises at the edge of El Médano in Granadilla de Abona, south Tenerife. The cone and the beaches around it are protected as a special nature reserve. The cove is only about 50 m long and 31 m deep, with pale golden sand. The water has a moderate swell, and this is one of the windiest corners of the island, which is why El Médano is known for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Its tucked-away position gives privacy, and the island's tourism board notes that many of the people who come here are nude bathers. Nude use also continues onto the end of the much longer La Tejita beach, which lies on the other side of the mountain. There are no lifeguards, showers or other facilities in the cove.
Getting there
The beach is reached on foot. Drive to El Médano or to the La Tejita side of Montaña Roja and park at the reserve car parks (room for roughly 50 to 100 cars), then follow the tracks around the base of the mountain to the cove. The walk is easy but has no shade. Paths inside the reserve are marked; stay on them. Buses serve El Médano, from where it is a longer walk.
What visitors say
Visitors describe a small, attractive cove with a striking red mountain backdrop and strong wind much of the time. Nude bathers spread between this cove and the end of La Tejita, and some reviews of La Tejita complain that nude and clothed areas are not clearly separated, while others are happy with the arrangement.
