About Playa de Mexota
Mexota (A Mixota) is a sheltered cove near Serantes in Tapia de Casariego, on the western coast of Asturias close to the Galician border. It lies between steep cliffs that block most of the wind, which is unusual on this exposed shore. The beach is about 250 metres long and up to 60 metres deep at low tide, with fine golden sand and moderate surf. At low water it connects with the neighbouring Serantes beach, so you can walk across from one to the other. Spain's national tourism portal calls it a nudist beach, the Spanish Naturist Federation lists it, and the Asturian naturist association ANAPA recommends it. Regional guides note it is not formally designated but has long been a meeting place for naturists. Occupancy is low even in summer. There is no lifeguard, no shower and no bar, only litter bins, and a campsite at Serantes is the nearest place for supplies.
Getting there
Leave the N-634 towards the hamlet of Villamil; the turning is signposted for Camping Serantes. From Serantes or from a track out of Villamil you continue on foot; there is no marked path to the cove itself and no proper parking at the beach, and one guide rates the walk as difficult. At low tide you can also walk across from Serantes beach. The nearest public transport is the ALSA Oviedo-Ribadeo bus, about 3 km away. Not wheelchair accessible.
What visitors say
Guides describe Mexota as one of the quietest beaches on the western Asturian coast, with few visitors and a mostly naturist crowd. The cliffs make it warmer and calmer than nearby beaches. Recurring advice: there are no services or signs on the approach, so bring water and food, check tide times if you plan to walk across from Serantes, and be prepared for a short scramble at the end.
